What is a Salon?

In the 18th century, for the first time in Western culture, women were allowed to be involved in society and lead discussions in areas that were generally the domain of men - literature, politics, and art. These intimate gatherings took place away from the court in a bourgeoisie home. It became a place where ordinary people interacted with the aristocracy. Music was an integral part of these gatherings. The name "Salon" comes from French, referring to the room in a French home where women received guests. SF Salon Music revives the spirit of the Salon to allow all to experience art in an intimate setting.
